The-Dream has had a hand in making hits for a long list of superstars. He penned Rihanna's breakout hit "Umbrella," executive-produced Ciara's latest album and sang a duet with Drake on the Toronto lyricist's Thank Me Later.

Now, the Atlanta songwriter/singer is readying his fourth release — to be titled The Love, IV — and trading in all of those celebrity favors for the effort.

"This album is gonna have more features, which is unique for me, 'cause I usually don't carry a lot of features," he told MTV News. "I'm calling it out now. I'm cashing in my chips. I'm gonna try to get everybody, Wayne, [Kanye], Jay, Drake, Mary, anybody that I've worked with or [loaned] a hand to, I'm trying to get on my album."

After flirting with an early retirement, The-Dream announced last week that he was at work on his next LP.

"Everybody's calling for an album now, so I should have one out by August," Dream said before the Los Angeles premiere of Justin Bieber's "Never Say Never."

He's now confirmed to MTV News that he has set a tentative June 7 release date. And in addition to the slew of guest artists he's trying to secure, he also revealed he's looking forward to working with a range of producers, including Carlos McKinney, Polow Da Don, (possibly) Dr. Dre and, of course, his frequent collaborator Christopher "Tricky" Stewart.

Are you looking forward to The-Dream's next album? Tell us in the comments!

Britney Spears, 'NSYNC Led The Class Of '99, But Whatever Happened To Len, Orgy?

The year teen pop broke was also a big one for Lou Bega, Tal Bachman, LFO.
By Gil Kaufman

The pressure had been building up behind the scenes for longer than most music fans realized. But when the teen-pop explosion burst onto the charts in early 1999, it felt like the music world had been blindsided overnight by a flood of squeaky-clean acts who would dominate the charts for years to come.

And in some cases, those ripples are still being felt today. It's hard to believe it now, but over the course of a few months between late 1998 and early 1999, radio and MTV were inundated with the debuts and breakthroughs from Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera, 'NSYNC, Backstreet Boys and countless other boy bands and teen singers who would rule the charts well into the 2000s, and in the cases of Britney and Christina, continue to lord over them today.

Of course, that bum-rush of teen acts and copycat bands also produced a bunch of groups that were barely a blip on the screen then or now (Five, Natural, 3Deep, A1, Another Level, C-Note, BBMak or Dream Street anyone?), not to mention some other pop flashes in the pan, some of whom survived and some of whom are named Lou Bega.

Here are what some of the survivors and also-rans are up to:

Lou Bega
Why you know that name: The German-born Latin music revivalist had a hit with a summer 1999 remake of the 1952 instrumental "Mambo No. 5," to which he added an indelible string of women's names (shout-outs to Angela, Pamela, Monica and Jessica). The song hit #1 across the globe ... and then Bega was hardly ever heard from again.

Len
Why you know the name: This Canadian one-hit-wonder, brother-sister act graduated from its early punk roots to a fizzy pop sound on You Can't Stop the Bum Rush, featuring the bop-tastic hit "Steal My Sunshine." But the duo's next LP wasn't released outside Canada, and they've been talking up their upcoming album for several years now.

Sixpence None the Richer
Why you know the name: The Christian group hit #1 on the pop charts a year after its 1997 self-titled album was released when "Kiss Me" was used on "Dawson's Creek" and in the teen flick "She's All That." The group followed it with a cover of the "There She Goes," the legendary one-off hit by the La's, which was added to the 1999 re-release of Sixpence's album. The band broke up in 2004, and singer Leigh Nash went solo, later forming an ill-named side project called Fauxliage. And then the group got back together in 2008 to release a new EP, a Christmas album and tour the U.S. and Europe.

Orgy
Why you know the name: The synth-rock band signed to Korn's Elementree Records, released Candyass in 1998 and broke through with a grim cover of New Order's "Blue Monday." Orgy released another album that fizzled, toured on the Family Values outing, put out their third album on their own label and have been threatening to make another album for several years.

Tal Bachman
Why you know the name: The Canadian singer/songwriter released the top-10 hit "She's So High" from his self-titled debut, produced by Metallica homie Bob Rock. The son of Randy Bachman, lead guitarist/singer of 1970s rockers the Guess Who and Bachman-Turner Overdrive, released another album in 2006 that failed to chart in the U.S. Most recently, he can be seen in the Bill Maher documentary "Religulous," talking about his break with the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Smash Mouth
Why you know the name: These chilled-out San Jose, California, pop rockers had a minor hit in 1997 with "Walkin' on the Sun," but busted it major in 1999 with their signature tune, "All Star," from their Astro Lounge album. The bouncy pop song made it into a string of movies ("Shrek," "Rat Race" and "Mystery Men") and then things got kinda quiet. They released another album, shelved one after that, and despite the departure of most of their members, they're now reportedly working on a new album, even as singer Steve Harwell is pulling a Hootie and prepping his solo country debut.

Everlast
Why you know the name: In 1998, the former lead growler for early '90s Irish-American rap crew House of Pain ("Jump Around") released his second solo album, Whitey Ford Sings the Blues, which mixed hip-hop beats and rhymes with blues and acoustic guitars, spawning the inescapable ballad "What It's Like." His similar-sounding 2000 follow-up, Eat at Whitey's, didn't catch on, nor did a more country-tinged 2004 album, White Trash Beautiful, and his recently released Love, War and the Ghost of Whitey Ford had not caught fire at press time.

The New Radicals
Why you know the name: Talk about a one-hit wonder. This Los Angeles band blew up with the Marilyn Manson/ Courtney Love-baiting power-pop hit "You Get What You Give" in early 1999 from the group's only album, Maybe You've Been Brainwashed Too. Reclusive leader and main songwriter Gregg Alexander broke the group up less than a year after the album's release and has quietly written songs for other artists since, including the 2002 Grammy-winning "The Game of Love" for Santana.

LFO
Why you know the name: The Lyte Funky Ones hit the jackpot on their self-titled debut with the 1999 song "Summer Girls," but faded soon after. Singer Rich Cronin appeared on VH1's "Mission: Man Band," and former hardware store clerk Devin Lima is releasing his rock-edged debut with his new band, Cadbury Diesel, in July 2008.

98 Degrees
Why you know the name: Featuring future "Newlyweds" star Nick Lachey, they debuted in 1997 but, like many boy bands of the era, hit their groove in 1999 with hits including "I Do (Cherish You)" and "The Hardest Thing" from 98 Degrees and Rising. After one more album, the guys went their separate ways in 2002, with Lachey going on to marry and divorce Jessica Simpson and release two solo albums, with another one due in 2009. The group has continued to discuss a comeback, but no plans have been announced yet.

And now, some names you might still recognize:

Jessica Simpson
Why you know the name: Like Katy Perry, Simpson started out in the Christian pop world, but crossed over into teen pop with her 1999 debut, Sweet Kisses, which spawned the hits "I Wanna Love You Forever" and "I Think I'm in Love With You." Less successful than Christina or Britney, Simpson released two more albums, married Lachey, appeared on "Newlyweds," divorced Lachey and moved on to roles in a series of flop movies such as "Employee of the Month" and "Blonde Ambition." After her 2006 pop album, A Public Affair, failed to catch fire, Simpson switched genres and had a top-20 hit in 2008 with her debut country single, "Come on Over."

Eminem
Why you know the name: It's hard to think of a time when Marshall Mathers wasn't in our lives, but the Detroit rapper burst onto the scene in 1999 with his major-label debut, The Slim Shady LP, which spawned the hits "My Name Is," "Guilty Conscience" and "Role Model." Em went on to world domination and a string of three huge albums before taking a hiatus in 2005 following a stint in rehab for a dependency on sleeping medication. He's laid low for several years, but is plotting his return in 2009 with an album called Relapse.

Kid Rock
Why you know the name: Fellow Detroit rapper Rock had been kicking around the industry for years, releasing albums on small labels, when he smashed the big time in 1998 with Devil Without a Cause. After a slow start, the disc blew up and became one of the best-selling rap albums of all time (11 million copies) thanks to hits — and "TRL" favorites — like "Bawitdaba," "Cowboy" and "I Am the Bullgod." Rock has continued to spin off hits with his signature country rock/hip-hop sound, most recently defying the odds (and iTunes) with the 2 million-selling Rock N Roll Jesus.

T-Pain Says He Won't Release His New Album Until Music Sales Pick Up

'Ain't nobody selling records unless you Susan Boyle,' T-Pain tells MTV News.
By Mawuse Ziegbe, with reporting by James "FLX" Smith

There was a time in recent pop-culture history when T-Pain and his Vocoder were virtually inescapable. You couldn't turn on the radio, watch a hilarious viral video or tune into an awards show without getting an earful of T-Pain and his computerized twang.

But in 2010, with album sales still sluggish, T-Pain said he's not putting out any new music until the tide turns.

"I got the mastered version of my album in my car right now. But I'm not bringing my album out until these artists start selling records again, 'cause ain't nobody selling records unless you Susan Boyle," T-Pain told MTV News. Even though his website is promoting his forthcoming effort RevolveR, the collabo king insisted he's going to fall back until album sales pick up. "I'm not doing nothing. I'm not bringing out no album, not dropping no more new singles until people start selling records again, and that's the approach I think everybody should take unless you Susan Boyle or Miley Cyrus."

Pain said that, these days, artists who are not running things on the pop tip don't really have a chance. "It ain't really nothing else you can do. Any hip-hop artists, anybody coming from the South, we ain't doin' it," T-Pain said. "Until everybody show and prove, I ain't droppin' no album."

While he's holding back on his solo work, Pain is still collaborating and told MTV News about creating the track "My Own Step" with ATL's Roscoe Dash for the soundtrack to the dance flick "Step Up 3-D." "The song was for somebody else at first, and then they was asking ... [T-Pain's label] Nappy Boy: 'Do we have some songs for the "Step Up 3-D" movie?' " said Pain, who sent songs featuring artists such as Sophia Fresh, Tay Dizm and One Chance. "They was like, 'You got some stuff with you on it?' I was like, 'Yeah, here go a song right here.' They came up to me like, 'Roscoe Dash got on.' I was like, 'Yes! We got him!' " T-Pain said, adding, "I've been trying to do a song with Roscoe Dash for a long time."

Pain, who's no stranger to hitmaking, said he was looking forward to working with the "Show Out" rapper, because he thought Dash brought something fresh to the game.

"I've been living in Atlanta for, like, two and a half years ... and I listen to the radio a lot, and they play all Atlanta. When Roscoe Dash's song came on the radio, I was like, 'Oh, thank you,' " Pain said. "It was just a relief. It was just something new."

Are you bummed that T-Pain is waiting to release new music? Let us know in the comments!

Jay-Z Says His Concert With Kelly Clarkson Shows Racial Unity

'There's NO such thing as Black music or White music, only Good or Bad music,' Jay writes.
By Steven Roberts

As odd as it may have been to see a bill featuring Kelly Clarkson, Third Eye Blind and Jay-Z, it's even stranger to see a blog post from Jay-Z.

Jay admitted that he doesn't use Twitter, but he managed to post a blog for RapRadar.com following his performance Thursday evening at the University of Arizona. The MC said he was caught up in the excitement of the moment, as well as the technical difficulties, and he missed the opportunity to say something important.

"On the show as well were Third Eye Blind and Kelly Clarkson ... I thought that had to be the oddest pairing ever, but soon realized it's what I've always professed. There's NO such thing as Black music or White music only Good or Bad music."

Jay said it was cool to like different things that are outside of your comfort zone. He said this also applies to the world around us and not just music.

"If you're African American you can have a Jewish friend." He brought up his own friendship with former Def Jam head/ current Warner Music CEO Lyor Cohen. "The Jew fro and the BLUEprint fro [Afro] are the SAME thing."

Jay added that he would like to see diverse concerts such as this happen more often, outside of the one or two festivals per year and big radio station summer concerts like Zootopia, held by New York's Z-100, among many others.

"I'm putting that into the universe," Jay blogged, adding, "Next up, [a concert with] Taylor Swift and Uncle Murda!"

CBGB Founder Hilly Kristal Dead At 75

Club owner died of complications from lung cancer on Tuesday; daughter planning to open more CBGB clubs.

Hilly Kristal, the founder of legendary New York punk-rock venue CBGB, died Tuesday from complications from lung cancer at age 75.

Kristal, who opened the now-defunct venue in 1973 in the then-gritty Bowery neighborhood in Manhattan, is credited with helping to launch the mid-'70s punk revolution with his championing of bands such as the Ramones, Blondie, Talking Heads, Television and Patti Smith. Following a final show in October 2006, Kristal had discussed plans to take the venue to Las Vegas (see "CBGB Owner Relocating Club — Urinals Included — To Vegas This Spring").

"I am very sorry that Hilly is gone," Blondie singer Deborah Harry said in a statement released to MTV News. "He was a big help to Blondie and to the New York music scene for many years. His club CBGB has become a part of New York lore and rock and roll history."

"Hilly was an integral part of the punk scene from 1974 until his death," said former Ramones drummer Mark Bell, a.k.a Marky Ramone. "He was always supportive of the genre and of bands like the Ramones, Blondie, Talking Heads, and Richard Hell and the Voidoids, and will hold a prominent place in music history. We are all grateful to him and will miss him."

CBGB, which opened in December 1973, was officially called CBGB & OMFUG, which stood for "Country, Bluegrass, Blues and Other Music for Uplifting Gormandizers." But it was the decision by the gruff, bespectacled and bearded Kristal to offer a residency to a then-obscure rock band called Television in March 1974 that helped kick open the door for a raft of bands that would spark the punk-rock movement across the globe.

Intent on showcasing bands playing original music, Kristal offered his stage to thousands upon thousands of young acts over its three-decade-long run. A fixture at the ramshackle club's front door, Kristal ran the club for all 33 years, overseeing its growth from punk's incubator to a tourist attraction — albeit one with legendarily putrid bathrooms and poster-caked walls — whose iconic logo can be seen on T-shirts all over the world.

According to his son, Mark Dana Kristal, Hilly "was suffering" a great deal during the final weeks of his life. "I think he thought he was going to get better, but he didn't. I just wanted him to be in less pain," he said.

As for his father's legacy, "He already has recognition for helping people with music," Mark said.

At a time when many experimental New York musicians didn't have a club to call their own, Kristal provided a kind of incubator that helped the bands find their sound, according to Patti Smith guitarist Lenny Kaye, a longtime friend of Kristal's who used to live across the street from the club.

"He provided this place to play for a lot of disaffected musicians, and he did that by having an open-door policy," Kaye told MTV News. "The only real thing that was important for CBGB was that you played original music. If you did, he was willing to give everyone the benefit of the doubt and the time to figure out what the music was."

Kaye experienced that policy firsthand as a member of Smith's group, which played a seven-week, two-show-a-night residency at the club in spring 1975. Kaye said the residency was key in helping the band to "settle into" its musical style. "It's the kind of environment that musicians need, like [New York's] Greenwich Village folk scene in the 1960s, or 52nd Street in the 1940s when bebop was taking shape. Those times had venues where people could see who they are."

Even after the golden era of punk had faded, Kaye praised Kristal for keeping that open-door policy over the next 30-plus years, inviting a variety of acts to play and asking them back if they could draw a crowd. "I saw such varieties of music in that club," Kaye recalled of the long, dimly lit room where curious masses shuffled past Kristal's desk beside the front door toward the low, cramped stage in the back. There fans would find acts that hoped the club would become part of their legend — or at least add them to its storied history.

"Hilly always gave Sonic Youth a break, from the moment I walked in there looking for a gig," Sonic Youth guitarist Thurston Moore told MTV News. "He knew I had been going there every night since 1977. I think we made $8 on a Tuesday night in front of hardly anyone [on that first gig], but Hilly was there, listening, and he told me that we could next play a Thursday night. He was fatherly in the truest sense, always having the time to talk with you without any condescension. Amid the chaos of Bleecker & Bowery, he was a figure of decency."

After the heyday of New York punk passed, the club continued its streak of booking bands that would go on to bigger and better things, as well as those who just wanted to get a taste of its storied past. That includes Living Colour, Guns N' Roses, Pavement, Elvis Costello, PJ Harvey, AC/DC, the Beastie Boys, the Cars, the Pixies, Soundgarden, the Police, Yo La Tengo, Sleater-Kinney and Sonic Youth — who launched their summer 2006 tour at the club and filmed the video for "Do You Believe in Rapture?" there as an homage to the venue.

The club began to lose out on bookings by the mid-1990s to the raft of other venues in the city, and turned its attention to lesser-known punk and hardcore acts. But it still had an allure for newer groups that were aware of its history (or that wanted to celebrate its status), attracting acts such as Green Day, Good Charlotte, 30 Seconds to Mars, Blink-182, Hawthorne Heights, Devendra Banhart, Smashing Pumpkins, Korn, NOFX, Pearl Jam, Rancid, Linkin Park, Coheed and Cambria, the Dave Matthews Band and the Strokes. During the 1980s, it also expanded into a space next door, opening a gallery/shop that featured acoustic music and an underground "CB's Lounge" that also hosted shows.

"Sometimes you forget, in terms of the mythology, how great a place it was to see music," Kaye continued. "It had a great stage, a great sound system ... and [Kristal] was always there, at the front desk, seven days a week, rain or shine, watching the [crowds] come in. He was a great New York character. He was family."

Though the venue was shuttered last year after a bitter, protracted battle with the owner of the building that housed the club (see "CBGB Owner, Landlord Reach Accord: Club To Close On Halloween '06"), it closed with a flurry of farewell gigs (see "Flea Jams With Patti Smith, Punks Weep At CBGB's Last-Ever Show"). Kristal's daughter, Lisa Kristal Burgman, told MTV News she will continue her dad's work, as he directed, by working to revive the CBGB name. "There will be clubs, more than one," she said, adding that they may or may not be in New York.

Kristal Burgman, who was 18 when CBGB opened, said people might not realize that her dad was also a musician and songwriter. "He sang at Radio City Music Hall when he was very young in the men's chorus," she said. "He could hit a bass C and he had perfect pitch. He loved music and his whole life was about music. My favorite memories of him was when he'd play guitar and sing at my birthday parties. But what made CBGB unique was that it was not about a man starting a business to make money, it was about a man starting a business to give artists a chance to be heard and play their music."

CBGB attendees would often see Kristal sitting at his desk, strumming an acoustic guitar and humming or singing in his deep voice, no matter how loud the noise emanting from the stage.

Kristal exhaustively documented the club's layout before its closing, with an eye toward reopening it — the club's bar, stage and other fixtures were put into storage (see "CBGB's Last Hours"). "I have to fight [to keep the club open]," he told MTV News in 2006. "We should be right here. New York is a wonderful city in a lot of ways, and we're part of it. Not because of me. It's only because of what these musicians who played here say.

"I didn't make this reputation, they did," he continued. "I cannot let this thing down. I can't give up if I think we're right in being here."

A private memorial service is planned, with a public memorial to be held at a later date.

On Wednesday, outside the now-vacant 315 Bowery, where CBGB once stood, fans had erected a makeshift memorial. The wicks of a dozen or so candles flickered in the breeze caused by delivery trucks speeding past the intersection of Bleecker Street. Few signs of CBGB remain, except for some band stickers plastered across nearby lampposts, messages fans from around the world have etched into the building's metal shutters — and, of course, the street sign that says "Joey Ramone Place" (the official second name of that block of East 2nd Street). One of the notes scrawled on the shutters reads, "R.I.P. Hilly, we'll miss you." A handful of bouquets were strewn along the sidewalk, one atop an orange-and-purple baseball bat — perhaps a nod to the Ramones' "Beat on the Brat"?

One passerby, who stopped to snap photos of the shrine with his cellphone camera, said, "This is now a punk rock chapel."

Eminem, Alicia Keys, Usher Join BET Awards Lineup

A Michael Jackson tribute is also confirmed for the awards show, airing live June 27.

Eminem, Usher, Alicia Keys and T-Pain have been added to the performance lineup of the BET Awards '10, going down on June 27 in Los Angeles. The hitmakers will join a star-studded bill that includes previously announced performers Kanye West, Drake, T.I., Nicki Minaj, Rick Ross and Ludacris.

A BET rep also confirmed that a Michael Jackson tribute is slated for this year's show, hosted by rapper/actor Queen Latifah. The 2009 event became an impromptu MJ homage after the icon died just days before the awards show aired. Host Jamie Foxx memorably Moonwalked and spoofed Jackson's "Beat It," and stars like Ne-Yo, Ciara and Keri Hilson paid homage to the icon during their performances.

Rolling Stone reported on Thursday (June 17) that BET insiders confirmed viewers can expect a performance of the monster collaboration "All I Do Is Win," featuring DJ Khaled, T-Pain, Ludacris and Rick Ross. The magazine also teased that the "All I Do Is Win" collabo is set to feature a special guest.

Jay-Z leads this year's BET Awards nominations with five nods, including Best Male Hip-Hop Artist and Video of the Year for both "Empire State of Mind" and "Run This Town" off his hit The Blueprint 3. Beyoncé, Alicia Keys and Drake also picked up multiple noms, with Mrs. Carter and the soon-to-be Mrs. Swizz Beatz both vying for the Best Female R&B Artist trophy and Drake competing with Hov for Best Male Hip-Hop Artist. Teen sensation Justin Bieber also received a nod for Best New Artist.

Soul singer John Legend will be honored with the Humanitarian Award for his philanthropic work while the legendary Prince will also be celebrated: The Purple One will receive the ceremony's Lifetime Achievement Award. This year's show, to be broadcast live from the Shrine Auditorium in L.A., will mark the 10th anniversary of the BET Awards.

Another 'Glee' Soundtrack Tops Billboard Album Charts

Rolling Stones, Black Keys make strong debuts on next week's top 200.
By Gil Kaufman

Photo: Columbia Records

You'd think that the fourth "Glee" album within seven months would burn out the audience for Fox's runaway high school musical show. But you'd be wrong. The peppy covers juggernaut will continue its reign of chart terror next week when Glee: The Music, Volume 3 Showstoppers will easily take the #1 slot thanks to sales of 136,000, according to figures provided by Nielsen SoundScan.

The disc — featuring covers of songs by the Beatles, All-American Rejects, Christina Aguilera, Bonnie Tyler and U2 — is the second #1 "Glee" record in a row after last month's The Power of Madonna disc. Coming in at #2 was the reissue of the Rolling Stones' landmark Exile on Main St. album, which sold more than 76,000 copies.

Just behind, with the best chart debut of their career, are Ohio blues duo the Black Keys, whose Brothers moved more than 73,000 copies for a #3 bid, besting a solid debut at #5 by Nas and Damian Marley's collaboration Distant Relatives (57,000). (The Billboard 200 chart now includes older catalog albums like Exile; in the current albums chart, the Keys are at #2.) Also breaking into the top 10 with a career best are Band of Horses, whose major-label debut, Infinite Arms, gave the tattoos and tumbleweeds rockers a solid #7 berth on sales of 45,000. The final debut in the top 10, at #10, is the second effort from indie-dance punks LCD Soundsystem, This Is Happening, which moved 31,000 copies.

The rest of the top 10: Justin Bieber's My World 2.0 (#4, 62,000), Lady Antebellum's Need You Now (#6, 46,000), Usher's Raymond v. Raymond (#8, 40,000) and AC/DC's "Iron Man 2" soundtrack (#9, 32,000).

The National's stay the top was short-lived, as their latest, High Violet, falls 12 spots in week two to #15 (22,000). Meanwhile, the long-anticipated full-length debut of R&B freakazoid Janelle Monae, The Archandroid, hits #17 (21,000), followed by the return of Talib Kweli and DJ Hi-Tek's Reflection Eternal, Revolutions Per Minute (#18, 21,000). The second album from Jack White's Dead Weather also had a brief sojourn near the top, as Sea of Cowards shed 72 percent of its business in week two, plunging 25 spots to #30 (13,000).

A rarities comp of the Stones' Exile also comes in at #27, selling nearly 15,000 copies.

Look for more shake-ups at the top next week when new albums from the reunited Stone Temple Pilots, rapper Cam'ron and the latest from Jack Johnson hit shelves.

Decemberists Lock Down First Billboard #1

Social Distortion and the Script also debut in the top five.

A week after Cake landed their first #1 debut, the Decemberists also put up their best-ever career numbers, easily taking over the top spot on the Billboard 200 with a strong debut for their most straightforward work to date, The King Is Dead.

The big debut crushes their previous chart best, notched in 2009 when their rock opera The Hazards of Love moved 19,000 copies in its first week and came in at #14. The King smashes that debut figure by selling nearly 94,000 copies, according to Nielsen SoundScan, halting the string of record-low #1 sales figures.

The Decemberists lead a stampede of new names into the top five, which also includes the Kidz Bop 19 collection at #2 (70,000); Science & Faith, the latest from Irish soft rockers the Script (#3, 49,000); a career-best bow for punk lifers Social Distortion with Hard Times and Nursery Rhymes (#4, 46,000); and a #5 debut for Allman Brothers Band singer Gregg Allman for his first solo album in 14 years, Low Country Blues (36,000).

The rest of the top 10: Bruno Mars, Doo-Wops & Hooligans (#6, 34,000), Katy Perry, Teenage Dream (#7, 33,000), Taylor Swift, Speak Now (#8, 31,000), Nicki Minaj, Pink Friday (#9, 28,000) and Mumford & Sons, Sigh No More (27,000).

Just outside the top 10 at #11 is the third album from soft rocker James Blunt, Some Kind of Trouble (26,000). With plans to unleash at least two more albums by summer, Kanye West's My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy drops six spots to #16 on sales of 22,000 as West comes within spitting distance of one million units sold.

Speaking of Cake, the quirky indie rockers drop steeply from the top, plunging 24 spots in week two to #25 as sales of Showroom of Compassion declined 67 percent to 15,000. Also facing a big comedown is last week's #2 album, Cage the Elephant's Thank You, Happy Birthday, which falls 26 spots to #28 on sales of 14,000.

On the heels of a Golden Globe win and just before receiving an Oscar nomination, the Trent Reznor-helmed soundtrack to "The Social Network" climbs 23 slots to #49 as business picked up by 52 percent (9,000).

The Decemberists also triumph on the iTunes albums chart, taking over the #1 spot, followed by the Script, Perry, Mumford & Sons, Social D, Blunt, the "Country Strong" soundtrack, Mars, West and Swift. The iTunes singles chart still belongs to Mars' "Grenade," which, despite a Steelers playoff win, beats out Wiz Khalifa's "Black and Yellow," which is followed by Britney Spears' "Hold It Against Me," Enrique Iglesias' "Tonight," Perry's "Firework," Pink's "F---in' Perfect" and Pitbull's "Hey Baby." Rounding out the top 10 are Diddy-Dirty Money with "Coming Home," the Black Eyed Peas with "The Time (Dirty Bit)" and Ke$ha's "We R Who We R."

The top 10 should remain mostly unchanged next week, as the only notable releases include new albums from Iron & Wine, Cold War Kids, Amos Lee and David Guetta.

'NSYNC's Joey Fatone Hosts Opening Of Public Restroom In NYC

They asked me, 'Wanna be king of the throne?' I said, Why not?',' Fatone says of Charmins Restroom opening.
By Jocelyn Vena

NEW YORK — Back when he was a member of 'NYSNC, Joey Fatone used to shut down Times Square when he'd appear on "TRL."

Now, he's opening a public bathroom in Times Square. But at least he's got a sense of humor — potty humor — about the whole thing.

"Well, everybody has to go sometime, and why not in the middle of Times Square?" he joked to MTV News at the third annual launch of the Charmin Restrooms on Monday (November 24). "That's the thing they asked me: 'Wanna be king of the throne?' I said, Why not?' "

Fatone also got the opportunity to design a stall of his own, opting for a concert-like setting, complete with disco lights and music. "My one is kind of like a rock-and-roll, being-onstage kind of thing," he explained. "You got the lights, a fog machine. It's pretty funny. The feel of it is being in a concert, and basically you're onstage and either you can do one song or two — there's the potty humor!" he laughed. "I know. It's coming. It happens."

Fatone also joked around about the possibility of his former bandmate Lance Bass winning "Dancing With the Stars." Back in 2007, Fatone took second place. If Bass wins, the only thing Fatone will say is, " 'You beat me, you bonehead!' "

"I wish him all the luck," he added. "It's going to be a close call. Plus, I have my old dance partner Kym, who's also in the finals, so that's a tough decision. I like both of them, but obviously Lance is the celebrity. He's really come out of his shell with a lot of things as far as stepping up to a lot of the dances. At first I know he was really nervous about it, because people kept saying he was the worst dancer. It wasn't he was the worst dancer ... [but] now he's getting it."

Bass recently said he'd love to get the band back together, and Fatone thinks it can happen once the guys take a minute or two to discuss their options for a reunion. "There's always a time and a place," he said. "There was a time and a place for [New Kids on the Block] and it was, like, 15 years later. Who knows? Everybody is doing different things. ... So it's interesting. It's like when do we say the five of us need to get together: Are we going to do it [or] are we not going to do it?"

"I've talked to everybody," he added. "I think I'm the only one who talks to everybody. I talked to Justin. I was with him in Italy for a wedding. I talked to JC like every other day and I talk to Lance every other day. I see Chris 'cause we live in Orlando."

Despite his success with 'NSYNC, Fatone said the only time he's been a celebrity to his Miley Cyrus-loving daughter was when he made an appearance on "Hannah Montana."

"It was interesting when I did an episode on 'Hannah Montana,' it was pretty funny," he said. "At first it was like ' 'NYSNC, what?' [My daughter] and her friends didn't care. But now that I did 'Hannah Montana' it's a different story. I'm awesome."

Backstreet Boys Talk New Boy-Band Titans The Jonas Brothers, Old 'NSYNC Rivalry

Group also reminisces about 'TRL': 'This is something that we've been a part of since the beginning,' Nick Carter says.
By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by John Norris

Remember the good old days when the Backstreet Boys and 'NSYNC were battling it out for boy-band supremacy, yet they wanted it to look like there was no rivalry and that things were cool between the two groups? Well, all these years later, the Backstreet Boys finally admit that there was definitely some competition during the late-'90s pop explosion.

"A healthy competition creates this big ball of energy that just doesn't stop and continues to grow," Nick Carter said. "Obviously, with 'NSYNC and with us — we're allowed to say it now, it's OK — it was a lot of fun, and it pushed us to be better as a group. I'm sure it pushed them as well. It's just like [Michael] Jordan and [John] Starks ... and the world loves it. We were happy to be a part of it. And we're still striving to be better."

"We all fed each other," Howie Dorough agreed. "Everyone was trying to be on top of their game. ... The media sometimes made us out to have a rivalry going on. ... There was never any animosity amongst us, but it made for a lot of fun for the fans to get out there and support both sides."

And it wasn't just during the fun times that loyal Backstreet Boys fans stood by their sides. The guys recall the time when A.J. McLean used the "Total Request Live" stage to tell the world that he was going into rehab in 2001. He says he chose "TRL" — which ends its 10-year run November 16 — because it was the obvious place for a pop act to go when announcing big news.

"I was definitely happy with that decision," McLean said. "We had talked about how we were going to approach it. I left it up to the four other guys, 'cause I was going through such turmoil in my head. But I think the reason why we picked 'TRL' was because it was our hub. That's where everything started for us. ... What better way to reach the fans? What better place for us to talk to people and be that honest with the situation?

"I still, to this day, have not watched the episode," he added. "I've seen bits and pieces of it, and then when I see Kevin cry, I stop."

In the late 1990s and early 2000s, the guys recall having the power to shut down the center of the Big Apple during a "TRL." "You used to be able to see out the windows, and then after that, they blacked out the windows and wouldn't let us go near the windows," Brian Littrell remembered. "We literally shut down Times Square. I remember it being calmer, then it became crazy."

The guys will be on hand for the "TRL" finale, where they'll be performing some fan favorites for the crowd. Nick isn't ready to see it go. "Sad. This is something that we've been a part of since the beginning," he said. "So many great memories. Why are you taking it off? What's wrong with you guys? Things have to change."

The guys are no stranger to change. In 2006, founding member Kevin Richardson left the group, and now the guys are pursuing "new goals." Dorough said Richardson is in "such a good place right now," raising a family and pursuing an acting career.

"In the beginning of the tour [this year], we left a gap onstage where Kevin would be, and then it started closing up," Carter said. "We love him to death. We have to move on. We have new goals and dreams."

The guys have since released new music and plan to release more next year. They also continue to tour, all with Richardson's blessing. And despite how weird it still is to not have him around, they have no plans to slow down anytime soon. "We're the happiest we've ever been. We're all united," McLean said, and Carter added that this is going to be the beginning of a new era — a fresh start for the guys.

And pop music today is as hot as it was nearly a decade ago, thanks to acts like the Jonas Brothers, and the Backstreet Boys are passing the boy-band torch to their former tourmates. "They opened for us on the 'Never Gone Tour.' They're a talented bunch of kids. They're growing up fast," Littrell added. "I don't feel reluctant to give them advice. I'll never forget: We were doing a show in Florida with the Temptations, and one of those guys stood up and said, 'This is show business, and as you're doing your show, your business could be running out on you.' I'll never forget that."

The Used Part Ways With Drummer So Band Can 'Move Forward'

'The band will carry on, and I will cherish my good memories,' Branden Steineckert says in MySpace post.
By James Montgomery

For months, rumors circulated on message boards that the Used had parted ways with drummer Branden Steineckert. On Tuesday, those rumors were confirmed.

The announcement came via a statement posted on TheUsed.net, telling fans the band "needed to move forward."

"It is with much sadness that we want to tell you that Branden is no longer the drummer in the Used," the statement reads. "We felt that we needed to move forward without Branden as our drummer. We wish Branden well and owe a great deal of gratitude towards him for his hard work over the years. We could not have gotten this far without him. We all wish much happiness and success in Branden's future endeavors — wherever they may lead."

Steineckert helped form the Used in 2000 and saw them release two gold albums: 2002's self-titled debut and 2004's In Love and Death (see "Tension, Tragedy Spawned The Used's In Love And Death"). But in recent years, Steineckert has seen his focus shift toward running his skateboard company, Twenty Twenty, and producing up-and-coming acts at his Unknown Studios — both of which fans saw as reasons for his ouster.

In a statement on his MySpace page — which doubles as the home of Unknown — Steineckert tried to steer clear of all that speculation. But he did hint that the split was decidedly less than amicable, writing in a post titled "Kicked Out Of The Used — My Brief Letter" that "[Guitarist] Quinn [Allman], [frontman] Bert [McCracken] and [bassist] Jeph [Howard] have agreed that they no longer want to play music with me. I'm truly sorry that it has come to this.

"The band will carry on, and I will cherish my good memories," he continued in the post. "I am so proud of what the four of us little nobodies from Utah accomplished. We broke out from nowhere ... [and] I feel so very grateful for the things I've experienced, the touching stories I've heard from such die-hard fans, the incredible people I've met and places I've been. To anyone who ever supported the Used during my time with the band, I thank you sincerely. I don't know what else to say. ... I wish Quinn, Bert and Jeph all the best. I will carry on doing what I love, which is playing drums and producing bands."

According to the Used's label, Reprise Records, there has been no replacement chosen for Steineckert and the band is hard at work with producer John Feldmann (who helmed its two previous albums) on a new record, which is due in early 2007.

Lady Gaga, Linkin Park Urge Fans To Help Japan Earthquake Victims

As the situation in Japan continues to deteriorate in the wake of Friday's massive 8.9 magnitude earthquake, the need for assistance has spurred a number of stars to reach out to fans to enlist their help.

Just days after announcing the initial dates of his first tour, the My Violent Torpedo/ Defeat Is Not an Option Show, troubled actor Charlie Sheen announced that he will be donating $1 from each ticket sold to the Red Cross Japanese Earthquake Relief Fund.

Linkin Park's Mike Shinoda has also gotten into the game quickly, designing T-shirts to benefit his band's Music for Relief charity. One shirt features the image of a paper crane-like white butterfly above the LP logo, and the other one reads "Not Alone" in a red, white and blue font. Donations of $10 can be made by texting "MFR" to 85944.

After tweeting on Sunday morning, "Remember as you go about your day please #prayforjapan & if you are able, text REDCROSS to 90999 to donate $10 to Japan's emergency relief," Katy Perry followed up later in the day with the message, "Imagine ... if we ALL texted REDCROSS to 90999 we'd have raised over 60 million dollars for #JAPAN RELIEF! BE THE CHANGE YOU WANT TO SEE! BE!"

A growing collection of stars is urging fans to donate to Japanese earthquake relief. On Friday, Lady Gaga sprung into action and offered her fans a special wristband whose proceeds will go to help the victims.

"I Designed a Japan Prayer Bracelet. Buy It/ Donate here and ALL proceeds will go to Tsunami Relief Efforts. Go Monsters," Gaga wrote. She also urged fans to visit the Citizen Effect website, where contributions will be matched by Google CEO Eric Schmidt and his wife, Wendy. They've offered to match the first $100,000 donated to a special fund set up to help the Red Cross deliver emergency services to people in Japan.

Other celebrities urging action include Justin Bieber, Taylor Swift, Adam Lambert, Diddy and many more who've sent their prayers to those affected via Twitter. Britney Spears encouraged fans to donate to relief organizations, tweeting, "So tragic. My heart is breaking for Japan."

Also making pleas were Conan O'Brien, Chris Brown and George Takei, each asking their followers to donate to the Red Cross.

As the official death toll in the worst quake to hit the island nation mounted on Monday (March 14) to 1,833 — with thousands more believed to have perished — Japan was facing a growing threat from a number of hobbled nuclear power plants. A second explosion in two days occurred at the Fukushima Dai-ichi nuclear plant on Monday morning, just hours before the plant's #2 reactor lost its cooling abilities.

While no significant release of radioactive materials is believed to have occurred yet, the race to cool down and secure the nation's nuclear plants is as urgent as the search for survivors from the devastating natural disaster. New images and video continue to emerge that paint a partial picture of the destruction in towns such as the 20,000-resident Minami Sanriku, which CNN reported had been turned into a virtual pile of rubble by the quake and the ensuing tsunami.

As gas and food stocks run low, Japanese citizens have been asked to ration their supplies while the United States and 69 other nations have pledged to help with search and rescue efforts.

For more information on what you can do to help with earthquake and tsunami relief efforts in Japan, head to MTV Act, or text REDCROSS to 90999 to make a $10 donation.

John Lydon Says Sex Pistols Won't Tour — But Would Love To Play Japan

Singer also contributed to British fashion retrospective at New York museum.
By James Montgomery

The Sex Pistols' John Lydon
Photo: Scott Gries/Getty Images

You've got to hand it to Sex Pistols frontman/agitator John Lydon: The guy's persistent.

It's been more than a month since he and the rest of Pistols failed to show up for their induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame — as they had promised (see "Sex Pistols Respond To Rock Hall Invite With Filth And Fury") — yet in a lengthy interview posted on his official site, JohnLydon.com, he continued to hammer away at the hall.

But this time, he wasn't railing against the institution's corporate ties nor its stuffy selection process — but rather, it was the evening's official "Guide Book," which is filled with such hyperbole as "The Sex Pistols played the industry, and the industry played them right back" and stated that the band's agit-anthem "God Save the Queen" "reached #1 in the U.K." (It only sort of did: The tune claimed the top spot on the New Musical Express' chart, yet only reached #2 on the official chart.)

"We tried to work with these people [at the hall of fame], we did make a concerted effort to get things right, but they consistently couldn't be bothered. But they can be bothered — and do go out of their way — to employ people who have no real grasp of reality," Lydon said. "We have re-educated the Halls of Shame many a time, and they've ignored the lot, and they're still employing naff journalists. It's exactly what I expected, which is why in all honesty I couldn't recommend anyone going to that hall, or having anything to do with them."

But Lydon wasn't all filth and fury in the interview — which identifies no interviewer and is billed "The JohnLydon.com interview." He took time out to profess his admiration for England's Arsenal football club and spoke of the possibilities of yet another Sex Pistols reunion. But this time around, he's not thinking about a tour (the Pistols toured in 1996 and 2003 and have played various scattered dates), but rather a one-off special on Japanese TV.

"Well, we got an offer [to re-form], but it was no good," Lydon said. "It was for a whole bunch of gigs. But what I wanted to do ... was to just do one big gig in Japan. My original idea was I wanted to do it on the day of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame [induction ceremony], but that was a bit childish on my part.

"I'd like to do one gig in Japan, live TV, and not bother with a whole tour because there's no need for it. And I've got too many other things to do. All of us have other work obligations now," he continued. "We would do a gig for fun ... it would be a possibility if it's for TV broadcast. Then it's special. It would be like a thank you present. Any other way, no. Not particularly interested, certainly not going to go out touring."

Lydon also spoke about his involvement in an upcoming exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, called "AngloMania: Tradition and Transgression in British Fashion" (which runs from May 3 until September 4). The show focuses on the groundbreaking British fashions of the past 30 years, beginning with the tattered jumpers and bondage pants sold by punk profiteers Malcolm McLaren and Vivienne Westwood at Sex, the London boutique they ran in the late '70s.

A spokesperson for the Met confirmed that Lydon will be recording a podcast for the exhibit, which will be put up for free download on the Met's Web site (MetMuseum.org) as well as on iTunes. The podcast — in which Lydon talks about the historical context of "God Save the Queen" and punk fashion in general — will also be available on the museum's headphone systems, so visitors to the exhibit will be able to hear his take on the whole thing ... which, in a manner seemingly unbecoming of the punk provocateur, seems to be unusually positive.

"They want me to explain exactly what the lyrics of 'God Save the Queen' were about. Which is a good opportunity to actually get something right. They came to us, so I have a sense of responsibility towards that. It sounds very good, sounds like a huge laugh," Lydon said. "I'm gonna loan them my original design — which was made by Vivienne — of the tartan jacket which I wore on the first American tour. The bondage pants fell apart years ago, they rotted actually. Quite literally rotted, but the jacket — moth holes and all — is still in existence. I love that tartan. I've never been able to get the tartan to do it again."

Raveonettes Attempt To Commit Murder In New Video

Chain Gang of Love drops August 12.
By Jon Wiederhorn

The Raveonettes
Photo: Red Ink

They haven't even released their major-label debut, Chain Gang of Love, yet, and already Sune Rose Wagner and Sharin Foo of the Raveonettes are trying to kill each other.

"He tried to smother me," bassist and vocalist Foo revealed. "Then I tried to throw him out of a big stairwell."

For the moment at least, the Raveonettes' homicidal desires exist strictly in their upcoming video for "That Great Love Sound," the first single from their debut LP Chain Gang of Love, which comes out August 12.

"There are all these little evil things we do in the video," Foo continued. "He tries to throw me from a driving car and I try to poison him. It was very freeing to do because we literally live together 24 hours a day, and sometimes we get really mad at each other. I've never actually wanted to kill him, but I might feel different in two years."

The clip was shot in London by Sophie Muller, who has also worked with Coldplay, Radiohead and PJ Harvey. For the uninitiated, it provides a glimpse into the playfully dark vision of the Raveonettes.

"It's like a Hitchcock kind of thing," said Foo. "There's a movie glamour to it, but the violence and sex don't seem real. It's like we're sort of detached from it all."

Lyrically, "That Great Love Sound" addresses the emptiness and frustration of thwarted romance.

"It's about the kind of unhappy situation when someone just f---s you over," Foo said. "But it has the kind of spirit where it's not depressing. It's just kind of saying, 'If you walk on me, it's just gonna f--- you in the end.' "

When the band assembled songs for its 2002 EP, Whip It On, it purposefully wrote all of the songs in B-flat minor. This time, the Raveonettes intentionally shifted the B-flat major. Why?

"When you write songs in minor it tends to be more dark and introverted sounding," explained Foo. "Somehow, writing in a major key makes the songs more bright and adds a melodic, poppy feeling to it. Major is the happy key."

Don't be fooled. Chain Gang of Love is still packed with menacing feedback, droning guitars and '50s girl group-style vocals that help make the songs menacing and surreal. But maybe the songs are a touch more hopeful.

"We're still writing in B-flat, so there's some darkness there still," Foo explained. "We still like that, and we like the noise and the distortion and dissonance. That's part of our sound. But I really see this record as a celebration."
