Lollapalooza turns 20 in 2011, and when the granddaddy of all American summer festivals decides to throw a birthday party, the biggest acts on the planet are invited to help celebrate.
Eminem, Foo Fighters, Coldplay, Muse, My Morning Jacket and deadmau5 top the Lolla 2011 lineup, which was revealed early Tuesday morning (April 26). Joining them is an appropriately eclectic mix of talent, including A Perfect Circle, Cee Lo Green, Damian "Jr. Gong" Marley and Nas, the Cars and Ween.
The announcement confirmed a Chicago Tribune report that surfaced in early February and cited "reliable industry sources" as saying Em, the Foos and Muse would headline this year's edition of the fest.
Speaking of this year, Bright Eyes, Arctic Monkeys, Big Audio Dynamite, Deftones, Explosions in the Sky, Crystal Castles, Lykke Li, Foster the People, Two Door Cinema Club, Best Coast and Grace Potter & the Nocturnals are also on the bill. Lollapalooza co-founder Perry Farrell will once again curate a dance and electronic music tent, which will feature performances from Girl Talk, Kid Cudi, Skrillex, Afrojack and more.
All in all, Lollapalooza 2011 features more than 130 bands. As in previous years, the fest will once again take place in Chicago's Grant Park, on August 5-7.
Early-bird tickets to the three-day event went on sale in late March and have since sold out. Regular-priced three-day passes are currently on sale through Lollapalooza.com and cost $215. VIP passes and travel packages are also available, and single-day passes are set to go on sale June 7.
For the full Lollapalooza 2011 lineup, check out the festival's website.

Malcolm McLaren, Sex Pistols Manager, Dead At 64
McLaren had been suffering from cancer 'for some time,' his spokesperson said.

Malcolm McLaren, the manager of infamous punk act the Sex Pistols and the man for which the term "music impresario" was probably coined, died Thursday (April 8) in New York. He was 64.
McLaren was born in London in 1946 and left home as a teenager, attending several art colleges (all of which he was expelled from) and taking up with the so-called "Situationist" movement, which favored absurd public demonstrations as a way of enacting social change. In 1971, he and designer (and partner) Vivienne Westwood opened a London clothing shop called Let It Rock, which would become the go-to outfitter for acts in the burgeoning punk scene on both sides of the Atlantic, starting with the New York Dolls, whom McLaren met in 1972.
In 1975, he had begun to manage a London act called the Strand, who become the Sex Pistols after McLaren and his assistant spotted a snarling punk named John Lydon and made him audition for the group. Lydon was rechristened "Johnny Rotten," and with him fronting the group, the Pistols began an assault on London's art-school scene. With McLaren at the helm, the Pistols' legend began to grow, reaching its pinnacle in 1977, when, during the Queen of England's Silver Jubilee, they released their incendiary second single "God Save the Queen."
The song was regarded by many in the British public as an assault on both Queen Elizabeth II (mostly because it equated her to the head of a "fascist regime") and the monarchy itself, because, as Rotten sneered, England had "no future." In May of '77, McLaren organized a boat trip down the Thames River, where the Pistols would perform the song outside the Houses of Parliament. The boat was raided by police, and McLaren was arrested, though he did succeed in his main goal: achieving massive amounts of publicity for both himself and his fledgling group.
Riding that wave, the Pistols released their (only) album, Never Mind the Bullocks, Here's The Sex Pistols, in October 1977 and geared up for an American tour in January 1978. They would implode after only 12 days in the States, splitting after a disastrous San Francisco gig. McLaren was accused by bandmembers (mostly Lydon) of not only mismanaging them, but refusing to pay them. The two would battle it out in court during the 1980s, with Lydon winning the rights to the entire Pistols catalog in 1987. The two men never spoke to each other again.
McLaren also released albums of his own, most notably 1983's Duck Rock, which saw him incorporate influences like pan-African rhythms, early hip-hop and even country. One of the singles from the album, "Buffalo Gals," showcased scratching and a square-dance cadence, and the opening lines were even referenced by Eminem in his 2002 single "Without Me." He continued to release albums well into the 2000s and branched out into painting, radio presenting and even the movie business, serving as a producer on the film adaptation of "Fast Food Nation."
McLaren's spokesperson told London's The Daily Mail that he had been suffering from cancer for "some time ... but recently had been full of health, which then rapidly deteriorated" and that his body would be brought back to London for burial in Highgate Cemetary.

Kindness Of MySpace Strangers Helps Guitarless Raveonettes
When duo's van was robbed, they reached out to online community.
By Jennifer Vineyard, with additional reporting by Karen Lee
The Raveonettes
Photo: Columbia
Last October, the Raveonettes' tour manager went to where the band's van was supposed to be parked in Brooklyn, New York, but it wasn't there — and neither was the Raveonettes' equipment.
Gone were frontman Sune Rose Wagner's vintage guitars, including the prized '61 Jazzmaster he had used to write all his songs for the past 12 years. Gone were Sharin Foo's basses. Gone were the drums, the amps, the pedals, all the gear that they needed for a show that very night, for an upcoming tour with Depeche Mode, and to record the next album.
"Suddenly, we just didn't have anything," Foo said. "Sune was having a nervous breakdown. We were devastated."
Even now, six months after the theft, the Raveonettes are still struggling with getting their insurance company's claims adjusters to give them approval to replace their gear. While this is being sorted out, they've done a little soul-searching to figure out how they were going to start anew.
"When something like this happens, you're forced to sit down and really talk about, what's the status of this band?" Foo said. "Where do we really want to go? It's kind of a therapeutic experience. You start to get to the bottom of what was the original motivation for this band, to reconstruct your lives and put it back together. So I guess that's the positive outcome of something really terrible."
The other positive outcome, Foo said, was rediscovering how supportive the music community could be. After struggling with a "crap bass that didn't want to tune," Foo said Wagner had reached the end of his rope.
"Sune was like, 'I can't do this anymore!' So I went on MySpace and I typed, 'I know this is a crazy request, but does anyone have a bass and a guitar we can borrow?' " Foo said. The next thing they knew, they were flooded with e-mails from random strangers, fans and fellow musicians who offered to come by and drop off vintage guitars — even one of those treasured Jazzmasters. "We were stunned," Foo said.
Inspired by the response, Foo started posting more messages and sketches of songs to get fan reaction to works in progress. The follow-up to Pretty in Black is still in the early stages, but because the duo were forced to try out new equipment, they were also forced to try out new sounds. "Different guitars have different feels to them," Foo explained.
They also added a heavier emphasis on electronics — with synthesizers, keyboards, drum machines and samples. "That's what it's done for us," Foo said. "We had no idea what we were going to do, and we've always embraced technology, found sounds and real sounds, but never so much with keyboards. It's fun, but you obviously can't just become a great synth player overnight, so we're just experimenting."
One of those experiments can be heard in the new Raveonettes song "Sometimes the Drop By," which Foo describes as "very 'Twin Peaks' sounding. It's got a cinematic feel to it," she said. "It sounds different than anything I've ever heard from us, with the texture from keyboards and synths. But the thing I recognize is the drone feel of the vocal harmonies."
Another new song, "Dead Sound," is more traditional for the band, Foo said, so much so that it might seem like a cover of a song from the '50s or '60s. "Some people would probably say, 'Is that Eddie Cochran or Ritchie Valens?' But, no, it's the Raveonettes."
Still, the new songs could go in a completely different direction, once the album gets more fully under way. "We've no idea where we're going to go," Foo said. "We could dump it all and do it the old-fashioned way, or it might sound the same. For now, we're just playing around."

Nick Bollea, Hulk Hogan's 17-year-old son, was discharged from a hospital in St. Petersburg, Florida, on Monday morning (August 27) after being involved in a car accident the previous evening. Police said Bollea, who was featured in VH1's "Hogan Knows Best" reality series, was driving his Toyota Supra at a high speed along state route 60 when he lost control of the vehicle and slammed into a raised median at 7:30 p.m. in Clearwater. The car reportedly flipped over, and the rear of the vehicle collided with a palm tree. Bollea and one of his car's passengers, 22-year-old John Graziano, were airlifted to the Bayfront Medical Center following the crash. The nature of both Bollea's and Graziano's injuries was not immediately known, but a police spokesperson characterized them as serious. Graziano remains under the hospital's care in critical condition. Alcohol is not believed to have played a role in the accident, but police continue to investigate the crash. No criminal charges have been filed. ...
Jordin Sparks doesn't have a name for her debut album yet, but she's got a release date set in stone: November 20. In anticipation of the 19 Recordings/ Jive disc, the "American Idol" champ drew back the curtains on her first single on Friday, debuting "Tattoo" on AOL's Pop Eater blog. The track hits radio Monday. Sparks told The Associated Press that the effort was partly modeled after one of her own idols, Kelly Clarkson — but that she's a bit nervous to be following in the wake of Clarkson and Carrie Underwood's success. Rapper Saigon was arrested at 1:45 a.m. on Wednesday in New York on Manhattan's West Side after police stopped him for a traffic violation and allegedly found a switchblade-like knife in the car console. According to his lawyer Scott Leemon, the rapper (born Brian Daniel Carenard) was pulled over while driving someone else's car in what Leemon called "another example of NY's finest targeting a member of the rap and entertainment industry ... the small pocket knife was found in a console in the car, not in his possession. As such, I am hoping after further investigation this will be another example of a rapper being wrongfully arrested." Because of a prior felony assault charge, the weapon-possession charge was bumped up to a felony, according to Leemon. Saigon was released on $1,500 bail and is due in court again December 5. ...
On the hunt for killer B-sides? How about Killers B-sides? The band — which put out its last studio album, Sam's Town, less than a year ago — is planning to pump out a rarities disc before the end of the year, Brandon Flowers recently told Billboard.com. Sonic Youth frontman Thurston Moore doesn't have too many kind words to say about Avril Lavigne and John Mayer these days — although he's got plenty of respect for a certain avant-garde legend and another classic-rock hero. "I am playing with Yoko Ono, and she's well past 70 and she rocks," he told Spin for the magazine's September issue. "Neil Young rocks. It's certainly not John Mayer or Avril Lavigne. Those people don't rock. If that's the young generation in the culture, then [forget] it. In the underground, the old guys are cool. I like the fact that the older we get the more we can rock." ... Ramones fans, get ready to be bombarded: More than four hours of unreleased and rare concert material is being piled onto "It's Alive 1974-1996," a double-DVD set poised for an October 2 release. According to reports in Hits magazine online and Variety, internal documents about the negotiations from Ticketmaster said it is "doubtful" that Live Nation will renew its agreement with Ticketmaster when their current agreement expires at the end of this year. The loss of the Live Nation business, which Variety said accounted for about 15-20 percent of Ticketmaster's U.S. business in 2006, could mean Live Nation is gearing up to launch its own ticketing venture.

JC Chasez Recalls 'Shooting The Breeze' With Michael Jackson
'One of the best moments of working with Michael is how kind he was,' former 'NSYNC member says.
By Jocelyn Vena
Few people are lucky enough to have known Michael Jackson on a personal level. Former 'NSYNC member JC Chasez not only had the opportunity to perform with Jackson on several occasions, including at the 2001 MTV Video Music Awards, but was able to hang out with the superstar offstage as well.
"I think one of the best moments of working with Michael is how kind he was," Chasez recalled. "He was so gracious. He always took time out to let you know he was thankful you were there. [He] wanted to make you feel good about what you were doing up there with him." (Chasez's former 'NSYNC-mate Justin Timberlake recently shared some MJ memories with MTV U.K.)
Chasez also fondly recalls the moments when they weren't performing and when Jackson was just "eating a sandwich, talking about his day. "It was a great experience, hanging backstage, shooting the breeze," he said. "That's what I enjoyed. It was great."
Long before he got to hang with Jackson, Chasez was just a fan who used Jackson's music as an inspiration for his own career. Buying Jackson's Thriller was his first foray into becoming a music fan; later, he performed Jackson's music on the road.
"One of the first tours that 'NSYNC did on the road in America, we actually did a Jackson 5 tribute," he said. "I don't think a lot of people remember that because it was so long ago. We suited up in '70s gear and broke into a couple Jackson 5 tunes. [It was] just one more thing we learned from them."

The video for Rihanna's "California King Bed" is as sexy as its title suggests. The sixth single off Rih-Rih's latest album, Loud, features the scarlet-haired Bajan beauty lying between the sheets with a shirtless lover.
In late February, the pop princess took to Twitter to poll her fans, asking them to choose her next single. "QUESTION EXISTING: I'm shootin a new vid in a cpl wks, I just need u to tell me, which song should I shoot? What is my next single?" she tweeted before firing off, "Its hard to go from s+m to SKIN! Don't want to be 2 swiney."
"California King Bed" was announced as Rihanna's next single a few days later.
Rihanna teased fans last week when she tweeted a photo from the shoot, and she dropped the video Monday (May 9).
Filmed in Cali and directed by Anthony Mandler, the video opens with the star laid out in a grass field, wearing a white bandeau and matching shorts, before moving into an open-air bedroom. Though the clip starts with Rihanna's head resting on the chest of her shirtless leading man, distance grows between the two.
Ripe with rich hues and scenes of an oceanfront sunset, Mandler flips the cam from color to a black-and-white lens midway through the clip, during the song's third refrain. The director quickly switches back to color as Rihanna returns to lie in the grass field in which she started.

New Releases: Bright Eyes, Trail Of Dead, Lil Scrappy, Chemical Brothers, Kenny Chesney

Nearly three years after the release of Bright Eyes' last studio album, singer Conor Oberst is rewarding patient fans with two discs at once.
The Nebraska-bred emo-folk artist's brainchild, Bright Eyes, will release two albums this week, the traditional I'm Wide Awake It's Morning, and the more experimental Digital Ash in a Digital Urn. Oberst didn't shoulder all the burden for the two albums, though; he brought in a couple of musically inclined friends for support, including Nick Zinner of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, who appears on five Digital Ash tracks, Emmylou Harris, members of the Faint and others.
Worlds Apart from Bright Eyes' style is the new ... And You Will Know Us by the Trail of Dead album. The album, which kicks off with a grandiose introduction featuring a choir chanting the names of Egyptian gods, was held back by the band's label to keep it from getting buried under a glut of holiday releases by big-name artists.
While he works on his solo debut, Bred to Die, due later this year, Lil Scrappy is tiding fans over with the chopped & screwed edition of his split album with Trillville, The King of Crunk & BME Recordings Present: Lil Scrappy and Trillville, which was released in February 2004.
Also hitting stores this week are albums by the Chemical Brothers (Push the Button), Emma — of Spice Girls fame — (Free Me), Erasure (Nightbird), Ani DiFranco (Knuckle Down), Agnostic Front (Another Voice), Buck 65 (This Right Here Is Buck 65) and LeAnn Rimes (This Woman).

Rolling Stones, U2, Madonna Are Top Touring Acts Of The Decade

It should come as no surprise to anyone who saw one of their multiple massive tours that classic rockers the Rolling Stones topped Billboard magazine's list of Top Touring Artists of the 2000s. What's shocking, though, is that the Mick Jagger and company are just one of three acts that raked in more than $800 million from 2000-2009.
Unstoppable touring juggernauts the Stones took the #1 slot with more than $869 million in grosses for 264 shows that played to more than 8.2 million fans over the past decade, followed closely behind by U2, who banked $844 million from more than 9.8 million fans for 288 shows, all of which were sold-out. The latter is an honor none of the other acts on the list can boast of.
Madonna, the top-grossing female artist, rounded out the $800 million club with grosses of more than $801 million for 248 shows (244 sold-out) that played to 6.3 million fans.
The top five was filled out by road hog Bruce Springsteen ($688 million, 403 shows with 248 sell-outs in front of 8.6 million fans) and Elton John ($604 million, 541 shows with 470 sell-outs in front of 5.8 million fans).
Among the other notables on the list: #6 Celine Dion ($537 million for 792 shows that played to 4.1 million) and the Dave Matthews Band, which had the highest audience figures on the list, with 11.2 million attending 547 shows (282 sell-outs) for a #7 ranking and a $505 million gross.
Country superstar Kenny Chesney was at #8 ($478 million, 622 shows, 9.2 million fans), followed by Bon Jovi (#9, $419 million, 249 shows, 5.4 million fans) and piano man Billy Joel (#10, $418 million, 241 shows, 4.1 million fans).
Reunited '80s act the Police were at #11 ($362 million, 144 shows, 3.3 million fans), just ahead of the perennially touring Eagles ($348 million, 240 shows, 3.1 million fans). Troubled rockers Aerosmith were not far behind (#14, $292 million, 320 shows with only 61 sell-outs to 4.6 million), and Metallica came in at #19 ($228 million, 187 shows, 3.6 million fans).
The only (relatively) contemporary act to crack the top 25 was Britney Spears, who landed at #21 with $216 million in grosses on 255 shows that drew 3.7 million fans.

Gwyneth Paltrow wasn't so into the initial idea of singing onstage last year with Jay-Z at London's Royal Albert Hall, she admitted to W magazine for its September issue. "Jay was playing at the Albert Hall on my birthday, and he said, 'Will you sing on this song?' " the actress told the mag. "At first I didn't want to do it!" Paltrow also talked a little about her husband, Coldplay frontman Chris Martin, who was also onstage for the strange collabo. "When Chris gets home, we're not going to do anything other than what any regular couple does," she said. ...
A day after Amy Winehouse canceled two European festival dates following a trip to a London hospital to deal with what her label termed "severe exhaustion," a spokesperson for the singer said doctors have ordered Winehouse to rest in bed. For now, she's still expected to perform at the Virgin Festival in Toronto on September 8 as well as a string of U.S. dates in September. Winehouse's spokesperson would not comment on British tabloid reports that said the collapse that led to the singer's hospitalization was possibly drug-related. ...

Jamie Foxx portrayed Ray Charles and Andre 3000 is set to play Sammy Davis Jr., so you'd probably expect another big name to be taking on the lead role in the long-in-the-works Notorious B.I.G. biopic, right? Not necessarily. An open casting call will be held to determine who will play Biggie, and actors and non-actors alike are being allowed to try out for the part. Audition videos can be sent here beginning Sunday at 3 a.m. ET. In 1995, Fox Searchlight Pictures acquired the rights to the movie, which is being produced by Biggie's mother Voletta Wallace and two of his former managers. ...
A woman is peeved that no one from Britney Spears' camp has contacted the woman about her car, which the singer was seen driving into earlier this week in Studio City, California. Kim Robard-Rifkin told CelebTV.com on Wednesday that, "It was simply like my car didn't matter to her, my inconvenience didn't matter to her." Robard-Rifkin, who filed a police report Thursday (August 9), added, "I'm not asking for money. I'm not asking for a new car. ... I simply want my car fixed, the same as I would fix somebody's car if I had done that." ...
Hilary Duff is branching out. The singer/actress has partnered with Michaels stores for Stuff by Hilary Duff, a new fashion-crafts line that includes bracelets, necklaces, charms, patches and more. Earlier this year, frontman Dustin Kensrue called the Alchemy project "daunting" in an interview with MTV News. ... If you've been exchanging MySpace messages with Chris Cornell in recent weeks, chances are you were dealing with an imposter. Former Spector employee and girlfriend Devra Robitaille was expected to testify Thursday after jurors returned from a tour of Spector's mansion in Alhambra, California, where he allegedly killed actress Lana Clarkson. The defense — which on Wednesday called to the stand a neuropathologist who said the way Clarkson's body was found was consistent with a suicide — objected strongly to the decision to let Robitaille testify.

So what do you do when the entire cast is supposed to accept an award at the Billboard Awards and your voice is only on the album in a select few lines. I felt extremely guilty." During the VMA announcement Tuesday, West made 50's prediction come true, declining the proposed debate and calling it "the stupidest thing." "What am I going to debate about?" he said. "I'm going to go in the studio and make music." T-Pain Says Michael Jackson Asked Him To Rework 'P.Y.T.'
'It was a mission, something I had to do,' he tells MTV News.
By Hillary Crosley, with reporting by Sway Calloway
Just before Michael Jackson's mother, Katherine, spoke to Oprah Winfrey on Monday, T-Pain told MTV News' Sway about reworking the musical icon's classic track "P.Y.T. (Pretty Young Thing)." The cut is on Quincy Jones' Q: Soul Bossa Nostra LP, which hit stores Tuesday.
"Aw, man, it was a mission, something I had to do, something Jackson asked me to do himself," Pain said at Lil Wayne's welcome-home party in Miami. "So it was basically a mission carried out by Quincy Jones. I think it's gonna be cool, 'cause, you know, before Jackson passed away, he was gonna do a tribute album of himself. It was gonna be everybody remaking his songs, and he was gonna be featured on the songs."
The Tallahassee, Florida, native says he wasn't the only Konvict artist included on the Jackson tribute project.
"It was gonna be Akon and him, me and him, Robin Thicke and him," T-Pain said. "So after I left his house — I had the pleasure of meeting him — I got a call from his lawyer, [who] passed away, too, right after him ... saying he wanted me to redo that song on the tribute album, and then he passed away. Then I guess Quincy Jones was just keeping the legacy going."
T-Pain said Jackson asked him to join the tribute project because of a certain bar jam.
"He said he had to meet me because 'Bartender' is the only song that he had sent somebody to the record store to get for him," said a proud Pain. "So that helped me out with the rest of my life!"
Jones' Q album also features remakes of the musical legend's classic "Secret Garden" as well as "You Put a Move on My Heart," which introduced the world to singer, and NBA star Grant Hill's wife, Tamia.
Are you surprised Michael Jackson was a closet T-Pain fan? Let us know in the comments!

Ozzy Osbourne accepts Black Sabbath's Rock Hall induction on Monday
Photo: Kevin Mazur/WireImage.com
"It's all over now. ... Rock n' roll is sh--. It's dismal," Sex Pistols frontman John Lydon railed in the June 1980 issue of the late, great rock mag Trouser Press. And although he said those words more than 25 years ago, Lydon's tune has scarcely changed.
So when it was announced back in November that Lydon and his fellow Pistols would finally be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame (see "Black Sabbath Finally Make Rock Hall Of Fame — Whether Ozzy Likes It Or Not"), it was just a matter of time before he came out swinging against it all. And when Lydon finally did — via a hand-scrawled note posted on the Pistols' Web site (see "Sex Pistols Respond To Rock Hall Invite With Filth And Fury") stating that the group would not attend the ceremony — the music industry responded with little more than a chuckle and a collective roll of the eyes.
And of course, when the Rock Hall held its 21st annual induction ceremony at New York's glitzy Waldorf-Astoria Hotel on Monday — an event that also saw the induction of Blondie and Miles Davis, as well as Black Sabbath and Lynyrd Skynyrd (both of whom, like the Pistols, had been passed over several times; see "So How Do You Get Into The Rock Hall Of Fame?") — Lydon and the Pistols were nowhere to be seen.
It was supposed to be a silent middle finger to the rock and roll establishment, though it actually seemed to disappoint rather than enrage the assembled musicians, suits and journos. (Rumors, which sadly turned out to be false, had been swirling all day that Green Day were going to induct the Pistols). Still, one cannot help but wonder what Lydon would've thought of the whole ceremony if he'd bothered to attend it.
He probably would have enjoyed the nasty onstage spat that occurred between members of Blondie, which was certainly the most "punk" moment of the night. After frontwoman Deborah Harry, guitarist Chris Stein, keyboardist Jimmy Destri and drummer Clem Burke accepted their awards, former members Frank Infante and Nigel Harrison — who unsuccessfully sued to rejoin the band on its 1998 reunion tour (see "Blondie Reunion Blocked By Former Members") — raided the podium and begged to perform with Blondie.
"Debbie, aren't we allowed?" Infante whined. "I thought the group was being inducted tonight."
"Can't you see my real band is up there?" Harry shot back, before launching into spirited set of Blondie's hits, "Heart of Glass," "Rapture" and "Call Me."
The ugly onstage incident spilled over into the press area, as Stein told the assembled media that he was keeping an eye on his Rock Hall trophy "In case I see one of those f---ers back here."
That sorry scene was, for better or worse, probably the evening's highlight. Sting inducted A&M Records cofounders Herb Alpert and Jerry Moss. The late Miles Davis was inducted by a polite Herbie Hancock. And Black Sabbath, who had made their displeasure with the Rock Hall known on many occasions, were strangely subdued when giving their acceptance speech. Even the rambunctious Ozzy Osbourne seemed touched by the honor, thanking the Hall of Fame "for getting it right" and dedicated the honor to the memory of former Metallica bassist Cliff Burton and former Pantera guitarist "Dimebag" Darrell Abbott.
"I was getting a bit tired of getting my hopes up year after year, but I'm happy we're finally in," Ozzy said before the ceremony. "It's a great honor and hopefully it will lead the way to more heavy-metal acts being inducted. I'd like to see Judas Priest in soon."
And though Sabbath did not play after accepting their award (because, as Ozzy delicately put it, "my b---s hurt"), the spirit of their brutal proto-metal was brought to thudding life by Metallica, who chugged through "Hole in the Sky" and "Iron Man" with wanton disregard for the eardrums of the largely graying assembled dignitaries. (It should be noted that even though frontman James Hetfield adopted a sorta-Ozzy falsetto for the tunes, as a Sabbath cover band, Metallica are a pretty decent Metallica.)
And as the night ended with inductees Lynyrd Skynyrd jamming away on — what else? — "Free Bird," Lydon's criticisms felt only partially valid. Sure, there are still many artists who deserve to be inducted (Grandmaster Flash, the Stooges) and the ceremony still has the feel of a corporate gospel brunch at the House of Blues. But the Hall seems to be working to fix its problems. Inducting the Pistols, Sabbath and Skynyrd was one step; festooning the Waldorf's stately stage with all manner of punky graffiti was another.
Maybe next year, they'll get it all right. And it'd be a shame if Lydon weren't there to see it.
